Have you ever set up a time for a meeting or a dinner and then forgot to put it on your calendar?
Take
that relatively minor scheduling difficulty and imagine what it would
be like if you were responsible for booking Paul Anka at The Phil, or
juggling the dates when he is available in Florida with the demands of
pre-scheduling the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, the Miami Ballet, Tony
Bennett, Diana Krall, and other (let us politely say) "more
temperamental" artists. Not to mention, orchestrating the arrival and
departure of the eight, 53' semi trucks full of the scenery and
equipment needed to set up "Les Mis?" Well?????? You get the picture!
At
the Women's Social on March 21, nearly 80 GNL women were amazed and
entertained by the behind-the-scenes tales told by guest speaker, Naomi
Buck, Director of Production and Programming for The Philharmonic Center
of Naples.
GNL Masters Class XVI culminated their year with a Supreme Graduation on March 28 at the Port Royal Club. Class Chair Mary Lynn Myers welcomed the graduates and their spouses, sponsors, and guests to the evening. The event was highlighted by an exuberant musical presentation involving the entire class and reflecting on many of their experiences of the past year.
Masters Class XVII was launched on March 23, 2012, with 42 of the class of 46 attending the Orientation Luncheon at Grey Oaks Country Club. They were joined by 10 guests, including president Bob Berlam, president-elect Sheila Clarke, past presidents Jeanne Bolds & Ben Tiley, plus the class leadership team and Kena Yoke of the GNL office.
It was a warm & lively group who enjoyed getting acquainted and discussing the ways and work of GNL.
President Bob provided an excellent overview of GNL and challenged the Class to exceed the achievements of "The Supremes" of Class XVI. President-elect Sheila explained the importance of the three legs of the GNL stool. Program chair Rusty Troth briefly set out the activities of the year ahead. He was followed by Jeanne Bolds, who made an excellent presentation covering the GNL website & its value to Masters Class XVII. A big thank you to Ned Bastow & Jeanne, who took each class attendee's photo for the directory in record time.

Joanne Wyss, Class III member and former GNL president, received the 2012 Parke Wright III Distinguished Service Award at the Annual Meeting and Celebration Luncheon
on Thursday, April 5, at the Naples Yacht Club.
On receiving the
award, Joanne stated: "GNL has been enormously important to my life in
Naples. I am so proud to be a founder and former president of this
great organization, which has done so much to strengthen our
community. I continue to be amazed by the people of GNL--their
exceptional talents, their unflagging dedication, and their authentic
values. I have made wonderful, lasting friendships. Because GNL means
so much to me personally, I am honored beyond words to receive the Parke
Wright Award."
Class IX and guests enjoyed a private tour of NBG on April 26 with Executive Director Brian Holley (Class XIII) and Director of Horticulture, Brian Galligin. The tour included a visit to "Chuck's Tree," the Royal Poinciana relocated to its current site with contributions from Class IX and other GNL members in honor of our late classmate, Chuck Berger. Thanks to Joyce Coughlin, our Garden tour was followed by Happy Hour and a delightful BBQ at nearby Windstar. photos by Barbara Teaford
